Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national examination conducted jointly by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee on behalf of National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. GATE examination is a Computer Based Test (CBT).

Organising Institute for GATE 2021 is Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.

Qualifying in GATE is a mandatory requirement for seeking admission and/or financial assistance to Postgraduate Programs (Master’s and Doctoral) with Ministry of Education (MoE) and other Government Scholarships / Assistantships, subject to the admission criteria of the admitting institute.

The GATE score is also used by some Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for their recruitment and by several other universities in India and abroad for admissions.

GATE 2021 score will remain valid for THREE YEARS from the date of announcement of results.

About GATE

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is basically a national examination on the comprehensive understanding of the candidates in various undergraduate subjects in Engineering / Technology / Architecture and post-graduate level subjects in Arts, Commerce and Science.

GATE 2021 will be conducted for 27 Subjects (also referred to as “papers”).

GATE 2021 examination will be conducted over six days and twelve sessions on Friday 5th, Saturday 6th, Sunday 7th, Friday 12th, Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th of February 2021.

The GATE examination is conducted in different cities across India as well as six cities outside India (In International centres, GATE-2021 will be conducted only if the current COVID-19 situation eases and travel and other restrictions are relaxed. Else GATE-2021 in international centres will be “CANCELLED”).

The GATE score would reflect the relative performance level of the candidate in a particular subject, which is quantified based on several years of examination data.

GATE Exam Eligibility

In order to appear for GATE exam, candidates must meet the prescribed eligibility criteria by the authorities. The GATE eligibility criteria will consist of parameters like nationality, age limit, academic qualification, marks required and more. However, candidates must also check the list of eligible qualifying examinations, before proceeding to fill the application form. Candidates can check the general eligibility criteria of GATE exam below:

  • Age Limit – No age limit.

  • Nationality – Candidates must be citizens of India. However, candidates from other countries can apply for GATE if they meet the given eligibility criteria.

  • Pass Percentage – No minimum pass percentage in the qualifying degree.

  • Academic Qualification – The candidates should have passed or be in their final year of Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology (B.E./B.Tech) or Postgraduate (M.Sc) degree in any relevant science subject.

GATE Exam Result

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) comprises of two papers. The Paper1 is conducted for admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programs (B.E/B. Tech) at NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), Institutions/Universities funded/recognized by participating State Governments, as well as an eligibility test for JEE (Advanced), which is conducted for admission to IITs.

General Aptitude Section

Will consist of a compulsory General Aptitude (GA) section constituting of 10 questions. 5 of the questions among 10 will carry 1 mark and the rest 5 will carry 2 marks each. Total marks – 15.

Marking Scheme

Two types of MCQs:

  • MCQs – 1 mark for each correct answer; 1/3 mark will be deducted every wrong answer.

  • MCQs – 2 marks for each correct answer; 2/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect response. There is no negative marking for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions

GATE Syllabus

The GATE syllabus will carry important topics and units that need to be studied to score marks. Candidates preparing for GATE exam will have to check the syllabus according to discipline/paper they are appearing for. However, General Aptitude needs to be studied by all registered candidates as it is compulsory for every GATE exam paper. By going through the GATE syllabus, candidates will get an idea about the topics, units that need to be studied for the exam.

How to Fill GATE Application Form?

Candidates have to apply for JEE (Main) “Online” ONLY by accessing the websites: www.nta.ac.in and jeemain.nta.nic.in The Application Form other than online mode would not be accepted in any case. Only one application is to be submitted by a candidate. More than one application i.e. Multiple application forms submitted by a candidate will be rejected.
If at any stage, it is found that the candidate has submitted multiple Applications and /or appeared in more than one date/shift, then the candidature will be cancelled and legal action will be taken including debarring in all future examinations conducted by NTA.
It is suggested that the candidates have the following ready before starting the filling up of the online application form:

  • A computer with good Internet connectivity
  • All your qualification details
  • Scanned clear passport photograph in JPG/JPEG format (size between 10 kb–200 kb)
  • Scanned clear signature in JPG/JPEG format (size between 4 kb–30 kb)
  • Scanned clear 12th Class or equivalent Admit card/Mark sheet/Score Card (size between 50kb-500kb).
  • A valid e-mail Id as all communication will be made on this e-mail Id.
  • A valid mobile number as all information via SMS will be sent to this number
  • A valid debit/credit card or Net banking account or UPI or PAYTM Service.
  • A printer connected to your system to print the confirmation page

JEE Main Cutoff Marks

Soon after the exam, National Testing Agency also declares the JEE Main cutoff marks along with the detailed results comprising of subject wise marks secured, All India Rank, category rank and the qualifying status for JEE Advanced.

However, based on the cutoff marks, candidates are shortlisted for counselling. The cutoff marks for JEE Main will be determined by the following factors.

  • Total candidates appeared
  • The difficulty level of questions
  • The overall performance of the students
  • The cutoff trends of previous years
