Day 5: Descriptions, Qualities, and Common Adjectives in French
By Day 5, you are no longer just identifying people, places, actions, and time. Now you move into description, which is a major leap in real understanding. This is the stage where French starts to feel expressive rather than mechanical. Children naturally reach this phase when they begin describing things as good, bad, big, small, easy, or difficult.
Adjectives are extremely important for listening and speaking at CLB 5. They appear constantly in opinions, complaints, explanations, and everyday conversations. In listening tests, adjectives often carry the key meaning of a sentence. If you recognize them, you understand the message even if you miss other words.
Today’s words are chosen because they are:
- very high frequency
- used in daily speech
- common in exams and conversations
- easy to connect with real-life observations

Why Day 5 Changes How You Understand French
With adjectives, you now understand opinions, feelings, and judgments. When listening to French, you will start catching emotional tone and evaluation: whether something is good or bad, easy or difficult, expensive or cheap. This is exactly the skill tested at CLB 5 level.
At this stage, even partial listening becomes meaningful. Hearing just a noun and an adjective is often enough to understand the message. This is why adjectives dramatically improve comprehension faster than adding more nouns.
