Govt. College for Girls Patiala was started as an Intermediary College in 1942 with a bunch of 20 students and just 7 subjects. Foundation stone of the present building was laid by the then Vice-President Dr. Sarvpalli Radhakrishnan. Today it offers a total of 12 courses, both at the UG and PG level. Besides the Arts stream, the college offers courses in Science and IT. Presently 2800 students are on its rolls. The college boasts of a well-qualified teaching faculty, with 21 members holding a Ph.D degree and 19 with an M.Phil.
Spread on an area of 25 acres, the college has well designed teaching blocks, well equipped labs including a language lab, a well stocked library, a heritage museum, a swimming pool, a gymnasium, a seminar room, an auditorium and well-maintained lawns. The college has always endeavored to fulfill its objectives of providing quality education for empowerment of women by making them economically self-reliant, with a positive outlook of life, while keeping them in touch with their rich cultural heritage and for uplifting the weaker sections of society. Keeping in mind, the changing scenario in the field of higher education the world over, the college has been trying to orient its energies, resources and infrastructural facilities to educate more and more girls and to widen their horizons.
