What are ultrasonic waves? Write down its properties.
Short Answer 6 Marks May-2023 • PSBTE DIPLOMAUltrasonic waves are mechanical sound waves with frequencies higher than 20 kHz (above the human audible range) that propagate through a medium like air, liquids, and solids by the vibrations of particles. Their properties are:
(i) frequency > 20 kHz,
(ii) longitudinal nature in most media,
(iii) require a material medium for transmission (cannot travel through vacuum),
(iv) produce interference and diffraction like other waves, and
(v) velocity depends on the medium (generally higher in solids than in liquids and gases) with wavelength related to frequency by
v = fλ.
