Studies show that criminals get low level of education. Some people believe that the best way to reduce the crime is educating people in prison so they can get a job after leaving prison. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is clearly shown in some studies that the majority of culprits are illiterate or less educated. Therefore, the most viable solution to reduce criminal activities is to educate them so that they get employment after imprisonment. This essay totally agrees with this notion because of the reasons elucidated in forthcoming paragraphs.
Firstly, having no employment is one of the leading factors that prompts some people to commit crimes. This is because everyone in this world needs some money to make ends meet, therefore, individuals without having money sometimes choose a wrong path and end up committing crimes, such as snatching, kidnapping or robbery. For example, a recent study by the Sunday Times revealed that the rate of crime is on the increase amongst nations having a high unemployment rate. Thus, this school of thought is preferable as it will help to control upsurge in crime.
Secondly, a lack of education amongst prisoners is another cause behind the escalation in violent crimes. Perpetrators often have an inability to distinguish between what is morally wrong or right. Therefore, rehabilitation, undoubtedly, is the best way to develop their intellect and make them good citizens. For instance, in a survey in India, the Indian Government found that only 10% of the offenders have engaged themselves again into unlawful activities after undergoing rehabilitation process. Thus, providing the necessary education to prisoners will deter them from committing crimes again.
In conclusion, rehabilitation is the best method to tackle crime woes the world over because it focuses on the root causes that are unemployment and illiteracy.
