IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card

Describe a company where you live that employs a lot of people
– What it does
– How many people it employs
– What kind of people work there
– How you feel about it

Well, big companies and firms form the backbone of any economy as they are instrumental in generating jobs and creating employment.
They pay huge amounts as taxes to the government and in turn play a very important role in the development of the nation and its people.
There are a number of such companies in India as well. For instance, Tata Group, Reliance Group, Mahindra Group etc.
Anyway, I stay in Ahmedabad which is the financial capital of the Indian state of Gujarat.
There a company called Torrent Group is one of the biggest employers of the city.
They have subsidiaries like Torrent Cables, Torrent Pharmaceuticals and Torrent Power.
As the name suggests, they are into pharmaceuticals and electricity business. They also work in the cable industry which provides television and internet facilities all around the city.
Moreover, it employs thousands of people in these sectors and is now a renowned company in the neighbouring state of Maharashtra as well.
It has different departments like HR, marketing, finance, accounts, etc which employs these people.
Of all these, the marketing and accounts departments employ the most people.
These people are very hardworking and easily approachable.
In the grievance department, people approach them with different queries and problems, but the staff always listens to each one of them very patiently.
Plus, they are known for their services and quickly resolving the problems registered with them.
They are very friendly as well because the company organises different outings, get-togethers and sports events for them at regular intervals.
I have been to such an event with my uncle as he is a Senior Manager in Torrent Powers and enjoyed it a lot there.
Further, I think that the work culture is amazing there as the hiring process is great.
They not only focus on your degrees and certifications but also on your soft skills like communication and problem-solving skills.
Even my uncle lacked a certificate but was still hired because of his passion, willingness to learn and contribute to the success of the company.
This really makes the company stand apart from the MNCs and makes me feel extremely proud.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 :

Follow-up questions of Describe a company where you live that employs a lot of people

1. Is it easy to find a job in India?

Um, it depends on your sincerity and passion. If you are talented and know your stuff well, you can easily land a job in India. You just need to be consistent in your efforts and keep on moving diligently in the right direction.

2. What should the government do if there is unemployment?

I think it is very important that the government encourages people for self-employment who can generate employment in the future. Moreover, promoting local small-scale and cottage industries can prove to be a boon for our economy. Apart from these, investing in infrastructure can also attract big MNCs to set up their plants in a country.

3. Is a high salary important?

Now that’s a very subjective topic. It depends on the priorities actually. For a person more focused on the job that he loves, even a moderately paying job will seem OK. On the contrary, for some people money matters a lot and they generally go for high-paying jobs and careers.

4. Is it ok to do a job you like with a low salary?

Well, it depends. If the difference in salary is menial then I’d rather go for the job that I love. Having said that, if the pay scale has a huge difference then I’ll probably go for the job with a higher pay as in today’s world money matters too.

5. Are there many big companies in your country?

Oh, there are tonnes of them. There is Reliance, TATA, Mahindra, Maruti, etc. the list goes on. Plus, India has become a consumer hot-spot in the world economy owing to its development and population. Hence many MNCs like Samsung, LG, Suzuki, etc have started operations in India.

6. How can a small company grow big?

I think persistence and hard work is the key. Also, with the right workforce, quality work and good marketing strategies, a company can grow big pretty quickly in today’s world.

7. Should big companies donate more to charities?

Yes. In fact not only the big companies but also anybody who has got more should try to help the needy on humanitarian grounds. It’s a win-win situation for both as the needy get the required assistance and the companies ensure good publicity and create goodwill for themselves in the market.

8. Should big companies be punished more seriously if they break the law?

Not just big companies, every company that breaks the law should be made to face the repercussions. People who try to get away by using connections and corrupt practices should be made to face even stricter punishments. There should be a serious fear in the minds of these offenders for our laws.

9. What are the good things about working for a big company?

I think many big companies provide lots of services and incentives to their employees. Also, the pay scale is amazing and the growth opportunities are immense.

10. What are the differences between big companies and small companies?

Um, the main difference is the workforce, I guess. As big companies have a lot of employees as compared to small ones, they can get a bit crowded and there is office politics as well. However, like I said before, big companies provide a lot of growth opportunities and a handsome pay scale along with incentives to their employees.
