IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card
Describe a law on environmental protection
– What it is
– How you first learned about it
– Who benefits from it
– And explain how you feel about this law
Enhancement in our knowledge of science leading technological advancements is affecting our environment.
The impact becomes negative if we don’t advance ourselves in the right direction.
For these reasons, different laws and regulations become necessary to curb the negative effects of modern lifestyle on the environment.
Many countries are gaining conscience regarding this matter and are proposing different laws to tackle this problem.
One particular law that I recently came to know of is the blanket ban on single-use plastic.
The law aims to minimize the use of single-use plastics as much as possible.
There is a provision of a fine and even jail for serious and repeated offenders.
I first came across this law in a newspaper article, but the information was very vague and not clear.
So to know more about it, I heard a speech of our environment minister and saw some videos.
Going by the knowledge that I have, it has some very positive implications on our environment.
Furthermore, this law is a boon for our animal kingdom, especially our marine life.
It’s a known fact that some big fish like whales and sharks face danger from plastics. Also, marine reptiles like turtles are known to ingest plastics mistaking them for Jellyfish, their staple food.
Also, this would help reduce waste generation and its accumulation in our landfills.
Also, I feel that this law is the need of the hour as some people don’t tend to take a cause seriously unless there is a strict law passed about it.
The results are quite visible as even my city Mumbai, which used to be filled with such waste flowing in its river and lakes has started to look clean and spotless in many places owing to this law.
Additionally, being a nature lover, it feels great to see my pets and stray animals enjoy freely without the fear of them eating plastics and suffering from complications as a result.
So, I feel it’s a great law and should be implemented more strictly.
IELTS Speaking Part 3 :
Follow-up questions of Describe a law on environmental protection
1. Do you think this law is acceptable to the people?
Definitely, I have seen many people complying with it happily. Also, nowadays more people are becoming aware of the harmful effects of single-use plastics. Although some people opposed the law initially due to the inconvenience and changes it caused in their daily life.
2. Is there any situation wherein people may disobey the law?
Oh, yes. Many people are too lazy to carry their own carry bags to the market and display a lot of ignorance towards this law. Especially the people who are involved in plastic manufacturing and trading intend to repeal the law for their own personal gains as it affects their business adversely.
3. Do people like being a police officer in your country?
Yes. Many kids aspire to become a police officer while growing up to serve our nation. Also, it is regarded as a very adventurous and prestigious job if you go at a higher position.
4. What qualities should a police officer possess?
They should have adequate knowledge of laws and regulations. Moreover, they should be bold and calm at the same time to handle uncomfortable and dangerous situations with ease. They should have patience and be loyal towards their duties and responsibilities.
5. Why some people prefer to be a lawyer?
Some people have a very good talent in debating on different issues. Such people often think of law as a profession. On one hand, some choose law as they have great value for virtues like justice, equality and fair treatment in their life, whereas, on the other hand, some become a lawyer for fame and money.
6. Should people be penalized when they use mobile phones while driving?
Absolutely. These days some people drive very recklessly while talking on their phone as their concentration gets diverted. This creates a dangerous situation for them as well as the other people on the roads. Road accidents for this silly reason have emerged as one of the major problems that is leading to fatalities among the people.
7. Is kindness the most important quality of a police officer?
Definitely, it is. In my opinion, a policeman should be both kind and considerate towards people and their problems. This creates a healthy environment of mutual trust between the police force and general public. As a result, people don’t need to fear approaching a police officer with their queries and problems.
8. Do you think both men and women can be police officers?
Yes, I think so. A combination of both men and women is a boon for our police force. This leads to the establishment of a comfort zone with the general female population. As in some circumstances they would feel more comfortable approaching a female officer rather than a male officer.
9. Do you think the police officers are paid too much?
No, I don’t think so. In fact, I think it’s the reverse. Considering the kind of risks they take and the problems that they face while on duty, they should be paid much more. So, I think they should be paid adequately and their remuneration should be at par with the services they perform for the betterment of the society.
10. Do all Indian people obey the law?
I wouldn’t say all, but a majority of them do. But I think that’s because they fear the punishment awarded for disobeying the law. That’s what human psychology is, I feel. The severity of punishment can act as a fear factor for people taking our laws lightly. Having said that, some people also follow the law because they feel a sense of commitment and responsibility towards their country.
11. Are there laws about education in India?
Oh, yes. Indian constitution regards education as an important right in the life of every individual. Hence, there is a Right to Education Act which aims to educate people irrespective of their background and financial status.
12. What kind of rules do schools in India have?
Well, schools in India are unique in their own right. They follow a strict time table and emphasis on discipline. There are pre-primary, primary and secondary sections in a majority of schools and the students have to compulsorily wear a uniform.
13. What can teachers do to make students obey rules?
The teachers can develop a bond of care and friendship with their students, so that they listen to them attentively and readily follow their words and rules. Also, teachers should have counselling sessions with their students to make them understand things and at the same time try to know the problems that they face.
14. What should parents do to educate children about laws?
To be honest, parents really need to teach their children through examples rather than just ordering them. As young children are known to follow things and form habits that they see from their eyes. Further, having talks and discussions with kids on different topics and interesting laws can be of great help in the long run.
