Describe a successful small business that you know.
- What is the business?
- Where is it?
- Who runs the business/how do you know about this business?
- And explain why you think it is successful?
If anything done pays off is referred to as successful. Many people opt to kick start their career by initiating some small businesses as they require less investment but sometimes may bring huge benefits to the one who runs it. Here I will talk about a small business which is running pretty well that I know of.
While I was studying in Dehradun in 2013, I saw several small businesses running successfully there but one of them was ‘Delhi ke Sardar’. Actually they were hawkers who used to sell some food items at a stall near Astley Hall on Rajpur Road. There were only three men who used to operate for the whole week except Tuesdays. They used to start working from 4pm to 11pm. They used to make vegetarian and non-vegetarian spring rolls, fried as well as steamed momos, noodles and manchow soup. On weekends they used to prepare some additional dishes like egg rolls, veg and chicken rolls. The dips they served along with the food items were specially prepared by them. During those days I read an article in the local newspaper mentioning that they make around Rs 7-8000 per day on weekdays whereas on weekends their earnings used to cross Rs 10,000 per day. The main owner claimed that after excluding the expenses and giving away Rs 15,000 salary to their waiter cum cleaner, they managed to save 2.5 lacs per month. Two men themselves used to manage the cooking and they had hired one person to clean up and serve to the customers using disposable plates, spoons and bowls. I believe that is very smart work, as all they had to spend on was the ingredients or grocery they needed to prepare the food items or they just had to give salary to their only employee. People used to come from far and wide to relish their tasty preparations. Their stall was always surrounded with people who had developed an addiction for their toothsome dishes. People could smell the aroma from a distance and they had maintained proper hygiene and cleanliness as well. Some of my friends in Dehradun still go there to savour the delicacies occasionally. So this is a fortunate small business that I witnessed.
