IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card

Describe a tall building in your city you like or dislike
You should say
– Where it is
– What it is used for
– What it looks like
– And explain why you like or dislike it

Well, I have come across various buildings in contemporary as well as traditional designs.
My city Amritsar has a great blend of small as well as tall buildings.
It has some amazing infrastructure.
One such building which is very famous is the VR Ambarsar mall in the Circular Road area of Amritsar.
It is situated right in the main business and commercial area of the city, making it accessible to a majority of the population.
Basically, it is a shopping complex which is a mixed-use building.
It comprises almost 250+ brands, 6 fine dine restaurants and an INOX Multiplex consisting of 6 screens.
People visit the mall to dine, watch movies and just have some fun with their friends and family.
I spend lots of time shopping with my family there, as the mall spans a big area of a million sq.ft and is 6 storeys high.
It is designed based on modern architecture with transparent and glass walls.
The interiors are nicely done with vibrant colours and the connectivity of different places inside the mall is great because of lifts and escalators.
There are excellent parking facilities available in the basement of the mall.
This makes it very convenient to visit the mall as parking is a major problem in a crowded area like the Circular Road.
Also, the fashion collection is amazing and being a great fan of traditional Punjabi food, I get to enjoy some very delicious dishes at the restaurants inside the mall.
Also, during the night, the building looks stunning with all the lighting used to decorate and light it up as the elevation is made of glass.

Follow-up questions of Describe a tall building in your city you like or dislike

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in tall buildings?

Well, in taller buildings as you go high up the floors, the air quality and ventilation becomes great. Also, they provide a great view of the city landscape. On the flip side, they are risky in case of hazards like fire and earthquakes. One more point that I dislike is the problem of connectivity as you have to first wait for the lift and then it takes almost 5-10 minutes just to leave the building in the first place.

2. Do you think there will be more tall buildings in the future?

Definitely. With the growing population we are experiencing a space crunch in almost all the major cities of India. The problem is severe in overcrowded metropolitan cities like Mumbai. So, I think tall multi-storey buildings will come up more in these cities.

3. Why aren’t there many tall buildings in the countryside?

Um, as I said overpopulation and land crunch are major contributing factors in the construction of tall buildings. However, villages and rural areas don’t face this problem. Hence, they don’t need many tall buildings there.

4. Why do some people like to live in tall buildings nowadays?

I think living on the upper floors of tall buildings provides a big respite from noise from the streets below. Also, you get a good amount of fresh and cool air or breeze as the temperature goes down when we move towards the higher floors. Also, it offers some amount of respite from rodents and different insects that infest the houses on the lower floors.
