IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card
Describe a time you got lost in a place you didn’t know about
– When did it happen
– Who was with you
– What did you do
– How you felt about it
Well, to begin with, me and my sister are travel freaks and love to travel across to different locations for leisure.
Moreover, it has become very easy and comfortable to travel with the advent of different technological advancements like Google Maps and advanced compass for knowing directions.
So, it has become extremely easy and safe to even go on solo trips these days.
However, this was not the case around 4 years back when I had gone for a road trip to Ladakh with my friends.
It so happened that 6 of my friends and myself had organised a 6 days road trip to the union territory of Ladakh which is around 1000km away from my city Delhi if we travelled by road.
For the trip, we divided ourselves into 2 groups each having its own car to travel. So, we started early in the morning as we had the target to reach Leh by the next morning.
All of us started referring to Google Maps to find our ways ahead. Soon we entered Ladakh and decided to take some rest before we continued on our journey to Leh.
After commencing our journey again, to our horror, Google Maps stopped working due to network issues. As a result, we lost our way as we missed a turn.
As the place is very sparsely populated and it was already past 8 at night, it was just me and my friends, driving on amidst the deafening silence and darkness.
As a result, we got stuck there for a good 6 or 7 hours and were clueless as to what we should do.
When we still couldn’t find a way out, we panicked and one of my friends even started calling for help frantically to a relative of hers who had been to Leh.
I too got scared seeing her, but I held my calm and started to think of a way to get out of this mess.
We started to move together in the direction in which we came hoping to find someone to get help.
Soon, we heard some footsteps and seizing the opportunity started to call out to the person. Luckily, we found a person who was a local resident and who seemed to know the way ahead.
He happily guided us and together we got out of there and moved ahead. After a while, to our relief, my phone caught the network and I could turn on Google Maps again. We reached our booked accommodation facility an hour later.
All of us were relieved to be out of that scary experience but were relieved that we had finally reached our place..
And just as we had expected, Leh was magical with all the snow around, not to mention the delicious meal that we were served, which felt like a blessing after the long drive.
All said and done, although it was a scary experience, it feels hilarious and silly now and all of us even laugh at it when we recall it together.
But, yes. The incident did teach me an important life lesson that it’s not always wise to be overly dependent on technology and gadgets as they can ditch us anytime because in the end they are just man-made machines.

1. Do you often get lost?
Oh, no. After that incident, I am always extra cautious and careful to not get lost. Also, these days with the help of Google maps it becomes very easy to navigate the directions and avoid getting lost. So, whenever I travel I keep my tab handy with Google maps open.
2. Is map-reading skill important?
It’s very vital. Having a thorough knowledge about reading maps can make travelling to different locations very comfortable and fuss-free. Plus, it helps us to stay safe in case of emergencies as we can figure a way out with the help of maps. It also helps while commuting to different places for vacations.

Well, that’s true. Some people are actually very good at reading maps as compared to others.
