I love shopping and I purchase different kinds of things every now and then. Here I would like to talk about a time when I bought a scooter for myself but faced a lot of difficulties in the beginning to drive it.
It’s a Honda Activa Scooter. Actually I and my father contributed to buy it for me as I needed a vehicle to go to college myself. During the school days, the school van used to pick and drop me but when I started college, I wanted to have a ride of my own. All my best friends had their own two-wheelers so I convinced my father to get one for me. I had saved Rs 10,000 from my pocket money so I gave it to my father to use for buying the scooter. I was on cloud nine when I got my scooter on my 19th birthday in 2012. I was so excited to have it and hence I requested my brother to teach me how to drive.
He agreed to guide me, on the very next day he started giving me lessons and we started practising. It was my first vehicle ever to drive and I didn’t even know the ABC of it. Therefore my father forbade me to drive the brand new scooter on my own as he feared that I may end up damaging it and would get hurt myself. My brother or father always used to accompany me while I practised driving. I found it extremely challenging to drive that scooter for the first few days. Balancing a two-wheeler was a herculean task for me as I did not even know how to ride a bicycle before that. However, my brother taught me the basics of driving from scratch very patiently. He used to sit behind me while I drove. We mostly went out for practice after 10:30 pm as traffic used to reduce by that time.
We also met with minor accidents twice but luckily we did not get injured. Moreover, I also faced difficulty in applying brakes as I used to pull them suddenly. It took me 3 weeks to learn all aspects of driving a scooter like using the side mirrors to keep an eye at vehicles coming behind us, overtaking, using indicators, taking a turn and maintaining balance. Subsequently, I still practised for another full week on vacant streets of our colony because I feared to ride the scooter on packed roads. Finally, after a month I gained sufficient confidence and expertise to drive to college and I have been using that scooter ever since.
