Some feel that school uniforms make schools safer for students, create a “level playing field” that reduces socioeconomic disparities and encourage children to focus on their studies rather than their clothes.

Others say school uniforms infringe upon students’ right to express their individuality, have no positive effect on behaviour and academic achievement.

Discuss both sides & give your opinion.

Number of folks assert that school uniforms ensure safety of students at school and promote equality among students coming from different social and economic backgrounds. It also inspires them to concentrate on their studies rather than what they have to wear to school. Others, however opine that school uniform seizes students’ right to show their unique selves and has no good influence on their behaviour or performance in studies. This essay will discuss both the aforementioned views and will arrive at a logical conclusion.

One school of thought holds that schools bring a sense of equality among students belonging to diverse social and economical backgrounds and a commonplace without any discrimintion on the basis of rich, middle class, poor, caste or creed. None of the students have to feel inferior or worry about what to wear as all are supposed to follow the same dress code. They don’t have to bother about stuffing their wardrobe with a variety of dresses to flaunt in school and thus it also saves their parents from making a lot of unnecessary expenditure. Moreover, uniforms reduce the potential of bullying as without school them, the chances for children to tease and make fun of one another escalate. Also, uniforms also increase safety as with school colours on, children can immediately be recognised or identified as a member of a certain school.

On the flip side, opponents assert that uniforms restrict the freedom of expression by not allowing the children to dress up the way they wish to which hampers their sense of individuality. In addition, certain uniform rules can also create some kinds of biases and inequalities such as girls in many schools in India are not allowed to wear pants or skirts especially in higher classes and are supposed to wear traditional punjabi suit salwar themed school dresses. Most school uniforms are not sponsored by schools and their cost has to be borne by the parents which adds to their expenses due to which this idea is not in favour of giving free education to all especially the underprivileged. Lastly, some children may find uniforms uncomfortable due to the fabric or the fit.

To sum up, wearing uniforms at school has both benefits and drawbacks but I believe benefits are more in momentum.
