Cell phones have become a part and parcel of our lives. They have eased the communication process to a great extent as they have broken all national and international barriers and bridged all the gaps. We just can not imagine our lives without cellular phones nowadays. However, at many instances it may be forbidden to allow using them. Here I will talk about one such time when I wasn’t allowed to use my smartphone.

A year ago, on my last birthday in September 2019, I visited Golden temple with my best friend. We left for Amritsar from Ludhiana railway station via Shatabdi express as that is the most convenient way of reaching there. After a two-hour journey via train and another half an hour journey by private cab from Amritsar railway station to Golden temple complex, we finally made it to our destination. We were so excited to be there as we were planning this religious trip for so long. We both had charged our phones and also carried a power bank along so that we can capture the memories by clicking pictures and making snapchat stories. After taking a holy dip in the holy pond, we paid obeisance in the sanctum of Golden temple. Further, we went to the top floor of the sanctum and began taking pictures there. While we were making a video of the whole view, we were called out loud by a sikh priest. He strictly forbade us to use cell phones in the Gurdwara premises for any purpose. He instructed us that taking pictures, making video calls or attending phones is not allowed at all as it’s a religious place where people are only meant to chant, sit quietly or listen to the holy hymns. We put our phones on silent mode and put them into our bags and felt so embarrassed and left for the refectory.

While we were having a community meal, I felt that my phone was vibrating in my bag but I remembered the guidelines given by the Sikh priest and thought to check it later once we were out. After an hour or so, we were done visiting all the religious places in the gurdwara and we finally went to Cafe coffee day for some coffee which is at a stone’s throw from golden temple. I finally took out my phone and noticed that there were missed calls from my mom and a few messages from my brother. I immediately called and explained the whole story to them. So this was a time when I was prohibited to use my cell phone.
