In some countries, secondary schools aim to provide a general education across a range
of subjects. In others, children focus on a narrow range of subjects related to a particular
career. Which of these two systems is more appropriate in today’s world?

Secondary school curriculum can be organised in a variety of ways. While several countries adopt the education system which orientates the students in a specific profession, I believe that teenagers should have access to a comprehensive learning programme with a wide range of subjects.

To begin with, a learning programme providing knowledge of a major subject is beneficial in some ways. Being exposed to expertise and skills required by a certain speciality at the young age, the students would stand a great chance to not only have a well-defined career path but also become competent workers in their later life.

Studies show that criminals get low level of education. Some people believe that the best
way to reduce the crime is educating people in prison so they can get a job after leaving
prison. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Education for offenders during imprisonment as a method to reduce the rate of crime has evolved as a major topic of concern in today’s society. While I agree that such a solution is effective to reduce crime, I am convinced that it is far from being the best method and there are many better ways of reducing crime.

I accept that education for prisoners may contribute to the reduction of the crime rate. The primary reason is that such a form of education could provide offenders with the working skills that are essential when they return to the community. With fortified job prospects, prisoners may, therefore, earn a living after leaving the prison and are less likely to commit a crime again.

IELTS Speaking Tips

The interview: Part 1

Task description
Part 1 of the interview starts with an introduction in which the interviewer
asks you basic questions about yourself and asks to see your
identification. The interviewer will then go on to ask you further questions
about yourself, your family/hometown, your job or studies and a range of
similar topics areas that are familiar to you.
This section of the test lasts 4-5 minutes and in it you may need to give
longer answers to questions to ensure you display your best ability.

What is being tested is your ability to:
♦ provide full answers to all questions
♦ give longer responses to some questions
♦ give information by describing and explaining

Sample questions
The interviewer will ask for general information about topics such as the
following:
♦ Your country of origin
♦ Your hometown
♦ How long you have lived there
♦ What you do: work or study
♦ Your interests and future plans

It is not possible to predict what topics may be discussed at this point in
the interview; however, some familiar topics related to you or your country
could include:
♦ Family and family relationships
♦ Modern and traditional lifestyles
♦ Traditional or modern buildings
♦ Tourism and tourist sites
♦ Celebrations and cultural activities
♦ Schooling and the education system
♦ City and country living

The introductory section of the test will go something like this:
♦ The interviewer greets the candidate and introduces himself or herself.
♦ The interviewer asks the candidate to state his or her name clearly for
the cassette and confirms the candidate’s country of origin.
♦ The interviewer then asks to see the candidate’s identification.

The remainder of Part 1 of the test will follow this format:
• The interviewer will ask the candidate set questions about your
hometown or your occupation.
• The interviewer will then ask set questions about a familiar topic of
general interest.
• They could ask three to five questions which will extend or develop
this topic.
• The interviewer may ask the candidate about more than one topic.

With the growing availability of TV and Internet, radios will soon become obsolete. Do you agree or disagree?

by Ielts Team October 11, 2018

The radio is an invention that came to popularity in the twentieth century. Its technology revolutionized the manner in which people communicated. I feel that although widespread use of the traditional radio may diminish into the future, it is a device that will never disappear completely. This will be shown by looking at trends in the growing car radio market and modern changes in the form of media that radios broadcast.

Firstly, as growing global affluence spurs demand for cars, radio use will also grow. For example, the booming vehicle market in China is causing an equally significant boom in radio set use. This is not a trend isolated to China; vehicle buyers everywhere are purchasing cars equipped with radio sets. Thus, this example clearly debunks the idea that radio use will be eradicated in the coming years.

Everyone should become vegetarian because they do not need to eat meat to have a healthy diet. Do agree or disagree?

by Ielts Team October 11, 2018

Everyone should become vegetarian because they do not need to eat meat to have a
healthy diet. Do agree or disagree?

Many people in the world currently choose not to eat meat in their daily meals. While I accept that this tendency can help people to live healthily, I believe not everyone should become vegetarian.

In my opinion, there are several benefits to being vegetarian. Firstly, since there are many types of vegetables that can provide people with enough nutrients, it has become less necessary for people to eat meat. For example, potatoes and beans are two popular dishes for families in England because of a large number of calories they can provide.
