Scientists believe that in order to protect the environment, people must use less energy in their daily lives. However, most people have not changed the way they live.
Why do you think many people have not taken individual action?
What could be done to encourage them to take action?
In this modern era, people want to have maximum comforts and do not want to compromise with their way of living life to the fullest. Despite the evident ill effects of exploiting natural resources for producing various kinds of energy, humans continue to make excessive use of energy derived from natural resources. The reasons behind this insensitive attitude of individuals will be discussed in the following stanzas along with some potent solutions for the same.
To begin with, excessive attraction and processing of raw materials like mining and fossil fuel usage to run machinery such as vehicles and generators leads to several serious environmental consequences. People use so many electronics and gadgets nowadays and to operate them they need enormous energy production. Fossil fuels like coal, gas and oil which take millions of years to be made are being used at an alarming rate which is diminishing their reserves worldwide. Excessive cutting of trees for making room for residential areas as well for using wood as a fuel is creating an ecological imbalance. People think that their individual contribution won’t make much of a difference and hence they continue to exploit nature.
As every lock has a key, this problem can also be conquered by taking some diligent steps and by understanding our responsibility towards nature. Government must spread awareness with the help of the media to make people aware of the consequences of massive energy exhaustion. For instance, the employees in offices must be penalised for not turning off the fans, lights, Air conditioners and Computers when they are not using it. Moreover, riding a bike or cycle to work as many people do in China and also persuading others to join a carpool can help save emissions and as well conserve diesel, petrol and gas reserves. People can install solar panels in their houses to get hot water as well as to operate electronics rather than using up electricity. For instance, a residential area named “Sustainable City” is the first net zero energy development in the Emirates, Dubai which is getting respect from round the globe for its eco-friendly and energy saving way of living.
To sum up, people must avoid using the energy exorbitantly as natural resources exploited for their production. They must sensibly use limited amount of energy to prevent the dire environmental consequences such as deforestation, increase in greenhouse gases, forceful migration of birds and animals, extinction of species, natural disasters as well as depletion in reserves of oil and ozone layer.
