Shopping is now one of the most popular forms of leisure activity in many countries for young adults.
Why is this?
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
There is no denying the fact that people, nowadays, have become more shopaholic in comparison to the past years. In fact, in many parts of the world, shopping is a free-time activity for people, especially youngsters. According to me, it is a negative development although it has a few advantages as well.
Consumerism has become a trend among the masses and classes because shoppers buy things from a ‘luxury point’ of view but not out of ‘necessity. Primarily, teenagers intend to have quick access to everything which drags them to spend extravagantly. In a tendency to follow the herd, they buy things merely to show off but not according to their needs. Moreover, the super-hot deals and endless choices in gadgets, motor vehicles, and clothes lure them enormously. Most importantly, these days the availability of credit cards have facilitated the youngsters to buy more even during the non-availability of money in the account.
Shopping as a leisure activity is a positive development only when young adults manage their budget independently to fulfil their short-term goals of buying the gadgets or branded items they longed for. This urge to achieve their goals motivates them to work harder. Moreover, the satisfaction of coping up with the up-to-date standard of living is another good reason for young folks to shop more.
However, the mindset of fulfilling unnecessary desires while shopping is a negative development for society as a whole. Since in the rat race of owning expensive things, youth ignore the investments and savings for the security of the future. Binge shopping further makes people spend much more than they actually afford which submerge them in huge debts. Ultimately, all these things hamper their growth on professional and economic fronts.
To core out, it is certainly a negative development because the drawbacks of this leisure activity have the edge over the few immediate benefits. Savings are immensely important for one and all since the future is unpredictable and savings are a saviour in the unforeseen consequences.
