Some people think international car-free days are an effective way of reducing air pollution, others think there are some other ways. Discuss both views and give your own opinion

Some would argue that celebrating car-free days all over the world is a better way of decreasing air pollution, while others of the opinion that there are some more effective ways. Although the first viewpoint seems a valid temporary solution, I believe promoting public transportation use is a long term solution.

On the one hand, supporters of prior viewpoint contend that when there are no cars on the roads for a few days, the amount of CO2 being expelled into the atmosphere will be reduced. This is because these vehicles are considered to be the primary cause of air contamination. For example, in a recent study in India by Times of India found that thousands of tonnes of CO2 only being released by fuel-powered cars each year. However, I believe this method is only a short term solution because this solution cannot be implemented for more than a few days.

On the other hand, advocates of later viewpoint opine that improving the public transportation system and encouraging people to use it is a much better way to minimize air pollution. This is because one public bus can replace around ten private vehicles with combustion engines which eventually lower down the CO2 footprint. For example, in a recent study by the Sunday Times revealed that cities that have a really good public transportation system, are less polluted cities. Therefore, I believe this is a much better solution to curb air pollution.

In conclusion, although celebrating car-free days all over the world is an effective short-term solution, I believe providing better public transportation and motivating people to use it is a much better way to curb air pollution.
